Yes. I’m alive.

2009 May 28
by Matt Roberts

It’s been several weeks (almost missed May!) since an update. Here’s the skinny:

  • Yes, I’m alive
  • Yes, I still have an Internet connection
  • No, I haven’t forgotten how to type
  • No, neither have I forgotten how to take photos

I don’t suppose a simple, “I’ve been busy” would suffice? I suppose it will have to for now :) I’m planning to update the blog with some photos from everything I’ve been doing for the past few weeks, but not until the end of the weekend – I’m currently moving nearly 20 GB of photos to an external drive, so you’ll have to wait until Sunday.

In the meantime, those of you who believe in karma will be happy to know that my brakes went out on my Explorer. I’m pretty sure that can be construed as some kind of cosmic punishment for not posting more often.

Here’s hoping you have a great weekend!

Business Headshots

2009 April 19
by Matt Roberts

One of the most needed but overlooked shots for a business is the headshot. Since they are deceptively straightforward, many businesses make the mistake of trying to do their own or allowing a friend of a friend with a camera to take the shots. The results can be poorly lit, unoriginal and poorly composed shots – leaving your literature, websites and presentations with a black-eye when it comes to showing off key employees.

Having a professional who understands your business and can compose interesting and creative headshots can make all the difference in the mind of your audience. John Felkins, owner of Accelerant Consulting, commissioned me to take some headshots for him recently, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The shots below are a few that were delivered, but I’d like to point out the range of shots – of course there is the close cropped vertical headshot, but there are also other shots that feature John’s personality and professionalism. John speaks to different audiences on many occasions, so he will be able to hand-pick the shot that will most connect with his audience on a given day. Take a look for yourself!

Mississippi Weddings

2009 March 23
by Matt Roberts

This past weekend, I shot a wedding in Pickens, MS. It’s been a while since I’ve been a part of a truly Southern wedding, but this past Saturday was without a doubt a textbook edition. The wedding was held at a church that’s been around since Reconstruction (everything from the pews to the handrails had been dedicated in honor of someone), and the reception was held at a family home that was built at the same time as the church. Fine china, candellabras you could use as boat anchors and lots of food (none of which I got, by the way… bummer) made this more than just a good wedding, it was a party! The bride and groom were great to work with, and I’ve got some great shots to share… here are just a few!

Spring Special!

2009 March 14
by Matt Roberts

Winter seems to be wanting to hang on for a few more weeks, but Spring is quickly approaching. As a result, I know a lot of you are going to (willfully or not) participate in some new family photos. I’d love the opportunity to make this a fun and painless experience for you, so as a result, I’m offering a Spring special!

Here’s the deal, book me for a shoot in April or May, and I’ll meet you and your family for an hour of stressless photos that you’ll treasure for a session fee of only $35 (normally $50). I’m always happy to make recommendations for locations, and, of course, I’m happy to meet you at your location! Once we’ve finished up our session, you can order as many photos as you want (packages start at $20 – see Services for more details), and I’ll deliver them on disc for you to make as many copies as you want!

Interested? Email photographyempire@gmail.com or leave me a comment on this post!

Running attire…

2009 March 14
by Matt Roberts

Liss and I are preparing to participate in the 13th Annual Bunny Run. The Bunny Run is a 5k, and well… last year, I was more than satisfied to walk the course and know that I wasn’t going to be in the top 100 (or 1,000, for that matter). This year, Liss and I decided that we would attempt to run in the Bunny Run, so we’ve started a program that will slowly get us up to being able to finish the 5k without needing paramedics.

Now, the idea of me running for any measurable distance I’m sure paints quite a picture in your head. If you can take that picture and manage to imagine me huffing and puffing around our neighborhood in pajamas, you’d have a good idea of what I looked like earlier this afternoon. No lie. Liss started a load of laundry about 10 minutes before we were about to set out, and I realized too late that my running shorts were a part of the load… Well, what else was there to do but to find my most athletic looking pair of fleece pajama pants (complete with button fly)?

I’ve got to say, I think we made better time today than we have before… I think it might have had something to do with Liss not wanting to be seen with me in public :)

Techno Soma

by Matt Roberts

I’m becoming addicted. If I find myself on the Internet (which is nearly every waking moment of my work life), I’m also finding myself on pandora.com. Apparently, I’m pretty slow to find out about Pandora (either that, or the 3 people I told in the office were trying to make me feel stupid), but as the old cliche goes: better late than never.

Currently I have 3 stations setup (Angels & Airwaves | Guster | Sister Hazel and Dave Matthews), and I’m loving it. Fortunately I get a lot of time to sit down and write for work, so I get a lot of time to listen.

If you haven’t already checked out Pandora, it’s well worth your time! Ok, off to bed.. photo updates coming sometime around the weekend.

Memphis Snow

2009 March 1
by Matt Roberts

Yesterday, much to everyone’s amazement, the meteorologists in Memphis turned out to be correct. Around 1:45, it started raining. Within the hour, the rain had turned to sleet, and within another hour, the sleet had in turn become huge flakes of snow. Liss and I stayed in for the rest of the day (have you been in Memphis with even a miniscule amount of snow? One word: gridlock). Of course, we went to bed thinking that it sure was nice to see an inch or two of snow, but we thought that the snow was pretty much finished.

We got up this morning and found another couple of inches, so we promptly let the dogs out and watched them clamor through the white stuff. After they had their fun, I brought out the camera, and we had a little fun!

Who doesn’t love a pseudo-artistic mailbox shot?!

Liss is a trooper… trying to wrangle the dogs into taking a picture. Nola licked her for the trouble.

Allie, sticking her tongue out for the camera.

I wouldn’t sit in that…

This was a good picture until Allie came darting by and distracted Nola.

Both of the dogs are big fans of eating as much snow as possible.

Downtown Jackson, MS

2009 February 22
by Matt Roberts

Many of you know that I was born and raised in Jackson, MS. I have incredibly fond memories of Jackson, especially downtown. This area of Jackson is not in any way a well-developed, thriving center of business and government. On the contrary, by walking roughly 5 or 6 blocks west on State Street, you’ll find yourself among once majestic buildings in various states of disrepair. My fondness for downtown Jackson is built around the mystique of these dilapidated structures.. You see, my dad’s family has been in Jackson for many generations, and growing up, they told these wonderful stories of vibrancy and life. Thus, when I was old enough to drive, I would trek down to the old train station, the Standard Life Building, the Iron Horse and (of course) the King Edward Hotel to visit these old family friends.

The King Edward Hotel seems to hold an almost mythic quality in the tapestry of Jackson. It is very much abandoned, but there is always someone (the mayor, the city council, investors, someone who knows someone who knows someone…) talking of restoring the old King back to his former majesty. Even if you do not keep up with the whisperings regarding his fate, King Edward’s husk is a formidable part of the downtown Jackson skyline, and as long as it still stands, there will always be a rumor that he’ll take up his crown once again.

Now that I’ve waxed poetic (and strayed completely from topic), I’ll get back to my point. Downtown Jackson has made quite the impression on me, and it is one of my favorite places to visit and photograph while Liss and I are visiting family. We were in town not too long ago, and I took along my camera. Alas, no photos of old King Edward, but maybe I’ll get some the next time I’m in town… I hear there might be some renovation starting soon…

Updating the Blog

2009 February 20
by Matt Roberts

Ah… finally!

WordPress is pretty much the most fantastic blogging tool out there, but I’ve been searching for a theme that gives me a bit more flexibility for making minor design changes. Finally, my quest is over. As you’ll notice (if you’ve been here before), the blog has taken on a new look. I’m still making some small changes.

Anyway, you’ll notice that I added Liss’ blog to the blog roll (over there ——>), and I’ve also added my Twitter account. If you’re interested in keeping up with my antics, then go nuts! I’ll probably put some new photos up at some point this weekend but probably not until Sunday.

Ok… going back to playing with my new Appearance options… Pay no attention to the shadow behind the curtain!
